WARRNAMBOOL CHEESE & BUTTER FACTORY
In 1855, farmers in the Allansford district met to discuss the setting up of a local butter
factory as an alternative to manufacturing the butter on their own farms. Commencing with
just six suppliers, the factory was officially opened in November 1888, and has since grown
to a major cheese and butter producer.
In 1889, the Allansford factory was well and truly up and running, gradually developing the
craft of butter making into the scientific-based industry it is today. The original wooden
buildings were destroyed by fire in November 1913, a similar fate befalling the rebuilt factory
in 1920. In fact, the present building is the fourth factory to occupy the site since 1888, as
a third fire in the early 1930's caused considerable damage to the existing building, which
subsequently underwent extensive renovations.
Cheese World opened to the public in 1986 as the retail face of the Warrnambool Cheese
and Butter Factory.
THE FIRST FLEET
In the beginning, when the first fleet landed on
Australian soil, there were seven cows and two bulls.
These were intended to supply the needs of the
colony and who would have thought that from this
humble beginning an industry would evolve that now
boosts over 1,5 million cows Australia wide.

the first year it was producing dairy products and since
then has developed to a stage where some 600 plus
suppliers provide milk into the factory. It is situated
some 250 kms South West of Melbourne on the
Great Ocean Road.
