Cheesemaking was first introduced into the Allansford region in the mid 19th century and the proud tradition is carried on today by the Warrnambool Cheese & Butter Factory, one of Australia’s largest cheese making manufacturer and exporter.

Cheese World.
Prior to the opening of Cheese World in 1986 the farmers would buy dairy products straight from the factory door.
Cheese World has grown from these humble beginnings to become the must see attraction it is today.

Cheese World has a Café, gift shop, local history, museum and cheese tasting Cellar offering a range of local gourmet products.

The history of the Warrnambool Cheese & Butter Factory.

In 1888, farmers in the Allansford district met to discuss the setting up of a local butter factory as an alternative to manufacturing the butter on their own farms.

Commencing with just eight directors, the factory was officially opened on 14th November 1888. Their first year turnover was £12,000.
In 1890 all suppliers were shareholders.

In 1889, the Allansford factory was well and truly up and running, gradually developing the craft of butter making into the scientific-based industry it is today.

The original wooden buildings were destroyed by fire in November 1913, a similar fate befalling the rebuilt factory on 6th February 1929.

The present building is the third factory to occupy the site since 1888, and has subsequently undergone extensive renovations.
